Char is one of Japan's most celebrated guitarists, and for decades an Olympic White Mustang has been his guitar of choice, on stage and in the studio. This Made in Japan Char Mustang is built to his own ideas, and it's a model Fender never officially sold outside Japan.

The idea was simple: take the Mustang back to its roots as Fender's friendly, easy-playing "student model", and make it more practical for real playing. The original dynamic tremolo is replaced by a synchronized tremolo designed specifically for this guitar, so it feels familiar to anyone who's played a Strat and stays in tune. The fiddly slide switches are gone too, swapped for a simple toggle pickup selector, and the volume and tone controls sit closer to the pickups, right where your hand expects them.

Everything else is pure Mustang. The short 24" scale is comfortable for smaller hands and makes bends easy, and the two original Mustang single-coils give that bright, punchy, slightly raw voice the model is loved for. It has a basswood body, a maple neck and a rosewood fingerboard, finished in Olympic White with a tortoiseshell pickguard. At 3.23 kg it's light enough to play all night.

This one dates from 2019 and is in great condition, with just a few light marks of use, all of which you can see in the photos. We shot them at sunset along the Sliema coastline, so you can see exactly how the Olympic White looks in golden light.
