The Best Beginner Guitar in Malta: A No-Nonsense Buying Guide

2 min read

We get this question in the shop most weeks, usually from a parent buying for a kid or an adult finally getting round to learning: "what's the best beginner guitar?" There isn't one universal answer, but there is a short list of things that actually matter — and a lot of noise you can ignore. Here's the honest version.

Ignore the brand-name debates. Start with body size.

A guitar that's uncomfortable to hold gets played less, full stop. Smaller adults and most kids do better on a parlour or OM-sized body; broader-shouldered players usually prefer a dreadnought. If you can, come sit with a few in the shop before buying — five minutes of holding one tells you more than any spec sheet.

Acoustic or electro-acoustic?

A plain acoustic is all you need to learn on — you don't need to plug in to practise. Electro-acoustic is worth the extra cost only if you already know you'll want to play through an amp, record, or perform. Don't pay for the pickup if you're not sure you'll use it yet.

Set a budget, then buy one grade above absolute-bottom

The cheapest guitars on the market are usually hard to keep in tune and hard to press down cleanly, which makes early practice more frustrating than it needs to be. You don't need to spend a fortune, but one step up from rock-bottom makes learning noticeably easier. Three real options we'd point a beginner or improving player toward:

  • Sigma OMM-ST (€330) — a comfortable OM-sized body, solid all-round first "proper" guitar.

  • Sigma 00M-15 (€399) — a smaller-bodied 15 Series guitar, a good fit for smaller players or fingerstyle.

  • Sigma OMTC-1E-SB (€520) — electro-acoustic, for a beginner who already knows they'll want to plug in.

Try before you buy

All three of the above are in stock and playable at Sun-Sounds in Sliema. Come in, sit down, and play a few bars on each — it takes ten minutes and it's the single best way to know which one is actually right for you.
