What Is a Djembe, and Why Do People Love It?

The djembe is a rope-tuned, goblet-shaped hand drum that originated in West Africa, traditionally hand-carved from a single hardwood trunk and topped with a stretched goatskin head. Played bare-handed, a single djembe produces an astonishing range of tones — deep, resonant bass in the centre, sharp cracking slaps near the rim, and crisp open tones in between.
